From the Artist

November Update:

About to be served:
The Funkstore show will be hung tomorrow. As joyous as I was at the prospect of having the whole place to myself, I couldn't decide which paintings to put up, nor how to hang the thirty or so ink pieces I have on paper, framed only by a sliver of black masking tape. But the problem was solved for me because I will now share the space with a Berlin artist. So tomorrow I will pack my paintings in the oversized market vendor's plastic blue and white striped 3'x4' bag and deliver them accross town. Once I know which paintings go up, price list will be established and invitations will be sent out for the Nov 16 vernissage.

Current cookbook:
Essays on the Blurring of Art and Life by Allan Kaprow. I first found this book thanks to a Collage class taught by David Hannah at Stanford. It has fed my work subconsciously certainly via the few excerpts we had to read as a class, concerning bringing art into life, exploring experience to make a more life-like art. The time has come however to tackle it in its entirety and make a more informed rapport with my work.

In the Oven:
-Fort Mason show with Jim and James Caldwell end of March 2008, maybe there will be paintings from Berlin still available to show, or I will produce a South Pacific series while I am in Hawaii and Tahiti this winter visiting Manu's family.
-Mentally prepping for an intense period of still life production after the Fort Mason show. I'd like to make an oil painting everyday for a yet undetermined amount of time to let go of composition and subject matter and see where the tenacity will take my stroke.
-Also, enlisting volunteers for an Impressions, Self-Impressions project. I'll need couples who are prepared to draw (doesn't mean you have to know how to, just means you have to be motivated to) to give me within a year or so, a few self portraits each and a few portraits of the other person. These I will assemble by reproducing them in print form in a way that explodes the form of the canvas a bit to make it more sculptural. The format will inform the conceptual interweaving of the impressions, because ribbons of reproduced portraits will interweave between two canvases. The first guinea pigs are myself and Manu.

Meanwhile, dough is rising:
Art School applications are due this winter. Portfolios and artist's statements in progress.

Sincerely,
Alice

Hi Alice,

I really like the chess pieces. The horses are so thick and statuesque. And the light gives the whole thing a political feel. Reminds me of the pan opticon or something.

love,
Manu
